Facebook has come a very long way ever since it was set up by co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room. In 2011, it had over 750 million users and now it’s close to 1.6 billion. The number continues to grow and Zuckerberg expects it to exponentially grow over the next decade. He predicts that Facebook is going to have 5 billion users by the year 2030.
Zuckerberg is reported to have made this prediction in an event at Facebook’s new offices yesterday. USA Today reports that Zuckerberg said, “We want to finish connecting everyone, we’re going to do it in partnership with governments and different companies all over the world.”
The report mentions that Zuckerberg’s goal is to bring “5 billion of the world’s 7 billion humans to its social network.” 7 billion is the current population of the world and surely one can’t assume that this figure won’t grow between now and 2030.
The United Nations actually predicts that global population is going to cross 8.5 billion by 2030, even so, Zuckerberg’s aim to get 5 billion on Facebook will be nothing short of impressive. The company will continue to push its initiatives like bringing the internet to far-flung areas of the world via drones as well as the controversial Internet.org program which many accuse to be a threat to net neutrality.
