The problems seem to be affecting Miix 2 10 and 8 models

Lenovo launched the Miix 2 (10 and 11 version) tablet hybrid back at CES 2014 in Las Vegas. The slate came with a keyboard capable of attaching itself to the main tablet body via magnets, which acted as a dock for the screen too.

Anyway just a few months after being launched on the market, customers have been complaining of touchscreen failure on the official Lenovo forum. The problem can be momentarily fixed by a driver reset, but that doesn't keep the issue from repeating itself.

Here’s what users are saying:

“The Touchscreen will stop responding but a driver reset will get it back 100% of the time. Unfortunately I can easily get it to stop responding again by wailing on the OS keyboard or playing a game.”

“This seems like a software issue (likely firmware or BIOS) but I am returning the unit and getting a new one to try and rule out hardware issues. Also, I am happy to make such a catastrophic quality control issue as costly as possible for Lenovo.”

“Hopefully there will be drivers or firmaware posted soon to update this but in the mean time I hope they like shipping brand new hardware, free of charge, ad infinitum.”

Some users have been instructed by the Lenovo support team to return the device by the distributor.

“Okay, contacted the support today, the guy advised me to return the device to my distributor because of an hardware failure. I did that, got a new one... again problems with the touchscreen, especially in combination with the keyboard dock. That can't be an hardware-problem.”

What's more, the problem doesn't seem to be solved even after a Lenovo staffer advises users of the Miix 2 10 to update the driver.

“I installed it, it said that the newest driver is allegedly installed, but I continued to install it. Didn't solved the problem.”

“Booting with the dock connected leads to the death of the touchscreen, after (some) reboots without the dock the screen is working quite well, putting it into the dock again the touchscreen stops working again, pulling it out of the dock -> screen is working again.”

Moreover, even users of the older Miix 2 8 seem to be dealing with the same unfortunate scenario. After going through the thread, one Lenovo representative summarizes the issue.

“Some customers with Miix 8" and 10" models are noting the touchscreen stops working. Uninstall / reinstall of the device or reset to factory preload may temporarily restore correct operation(?).”

“Exchanging for another has not been a proven solution as some replacements may develop the symptoms again. This sounds like some kind of software issue - whether firmware of the digitizer, device drivers.”

At least, Lenovo appears to be looking into the problem, but owners are getting restless, especially in the absence of a detailed explanation of what’s really causing this. We’ll keep you updated on the matter, in case a fix is made available.
