Hisense, co-founder of QLED Alliance, planning to launch OLED TV this year

Hisense has together with Samsung and TCL founded the ‘QLED Alliance’ as a front against OLED. Nonetheless, the company is planning to launch its first OLED TV this year in order to offer “a choice of both leading technologies”.

Alliances stand and fall but one can wonder if the QLED Alliance ever got up on its feet. The alliance was formed in April 2017. Samsung and TCL are both selling TVs under the fairly misleading “QLED TV” moniker, whereas Hisense holds onto its – just as misleading – “ULED” brand for LCD TVs.

In 2018, Hisense will jump over to the dark side. The company is planning to launch its first OLED TV in the first half of the year. It will feature 4K resolution and HDR support but not much else is known. Hisense has released a picture, too.

- "Hisense aims to provide our customers with the latest technologies and the introduction of OLED in our TV lineup is yet another example of how we are responding to consumer demand by offering a choice of both leading technologies,” said Andre Iannuzzi, Head of Marketing, Hisense Australia.

This is a surprise considering that Hisense (together with Samsung and TCL) was one of the few major TV manufacturers to have withstood the temptation of sourcing panels from LG.Display. In 2018, Bang & Olufsen, Grundig, LG, Loewe, Panasonic, Philips, Sony, and others will offer OLED TVs.

At CES, the Chinese company also unveiled a new line-up of LCD TVs, including a flagship LCD TV with 1000+ dimming zones. It also announced that it is bringing Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to its TVs.

Hisense is planning to launch the OLED TV in the UK and Australia in the first half of 2018. No plans for the US were announced.
