Disney+ streaming service will include the entire Disney movie library

08 Mar 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the new streaming service will include “the entire Disney motion picture library” shortly after launch later this year, according to a report by Polygon.

The Disney movie library

Disney’s movie library dates back to the 1930s and spans a significant number of classics such as Pinocchio, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King as well as more recent movies such as Frozen and Moana.

All of these movies will be available on Disney+, which is the name of the new streaming service.

- “The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television, with a lot of original product as well, movies and television. And at some point fairly soon after launch it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a “vault” and brought out basically every few years will be on the service. And then, of course, we’re producing a number of original movies and original television shows as well that will be Disney-branded,” Bob Iger, Disney CEO, told investors at a meeting in St. Louis.

The “vault”, which Iger is referring to, has been used to limit availability of classic movies. From time to time, Disney would pick a classic movie from its vault and give it a limited release after which it was taken off the market again. With the launch of Disney+, the “Disney Vault” will essentially dissolve.

 Disney+

Iger added that new movies such as the upcoming Captain Marvel will become available on Disney+ within one year of theatrical release. This is in stark contrast to Netflix who debuts its own movies globally on day one or in a few cases almost immediately after theatrical release.

In addition, Disney+ will offer content from Lucasfilm, Pixar, National Geographic, Marvel, and other studios. The company has confirmed that it is developing TV series based on Star Wars, Monsters Inc., High School Musical, and Marvel characters. Disney is also in the process of acquiring 21st Century Fox.

Disney’s streaming service will compete with the likes of Netflix and will launch later this year in the US and possibly other regions. Pricing has not been announced.
