CES 2018 | AMD Ryzen and Polaris will power the Acer Nitro 5 for just $800 USD

Teaser
Strangely enough, the notebook will be sticking with the older Polaris architecture instead of utilizing AMD's newer and more efficient integrated Vega solutions.

Whereas the sizable Acer Predator series is targeted more towards enthusiasts, the leaner Acer Aspire Nitro series is designed specifically for mainstream gamers with prices that generally hover nearer the $1000 USD mark. We've published on plenty of Nitro gaming systems in the past that have all been equipped with Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs. This latest Nitro release, however, will be opening the doors to a model powered exclusively by AMD hardware.

Simply called the Nitro 5, the upcoming 15.6-inch notebook will utilize the exact same chassis as the existing Intel-powered Nitro 5 launched late last year. Internally, users will find an AMD Ryzen processor and a very uncommon mobile Radeon RX 560 GPU. Acer is remaining silent for now on the exact Ryzen CPU and if there will be additional SKUs with other CPU or GPU options. Everything else is otherwise identical and we recommend checking out our existing review on the Intel Nitro 5 for more information on the keyboard, connectivity options, and chassis features.

The Radeon RX 560 for laptops is roughly comparable to the GeForce GTX 1050 or desktop Radeon RX 460 in raw performance. Since the AMD Nitro 5 will retail for $800 USD, users will be saving about $200 to $300 USD compared to an equivalent Intel configuration with the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti. Characteristics such as fan noise, heat, and battery life, however, are likely to be different between the AMD and Intel SKUs given the differing performance-per-Watt between Kaby Lake, Ryzen, Pascal, and Polaris families.

The AMD-powered Acer Nitro 5 is launching this April in both North American and EMEA regions.
